Marine style has gained popularity for a very long time and to this day has not lost its relevance. We decided to follow how it changed, using Burda magazines as examples.

Marine style of clothing is distinguished by brightness, freedom and convenience. Its characteristic features: strip, blue-white-red colors and various elements related to marine subjects - images of ships and sails, marine animals and plants. Often there are details of clothing borrowed from the uniform of sailors.

A bit of history

Many fashion historians call the place of origin of this style of Great Britain the XIX century. The British were very proud of their fleet, so they gladly borrowed elements of sailors' clothes and added them to their wardrobe. Such clothes were very practical and comfortable. Stylistically, it can be divided into two types: the first resembled the form of a higher command. This option was rather smart. The second, simpler, got out of the form of ordinary sailors - free, rude, everyday.
This style gained fame thanks to the royal family - at the insistence of Queen Victoria, her son, Prince of Wales, Albert Edward wore the uniform of a naval officer. Representatives of high English society began to imitate him. Pretty soon, this style went beyond the borders of Great Britain and won love in other European countries. This style was especially popular in children's clothing.
Coco Chanel helped to finally conquer the world of fashion with a marine style. At the beginning of the 20th century, she often rested on the seashore in Deauville (this place was very popular among Parisian aristocrats). On the beach, she often appeared in an ordinary sailor suit, a simple skirt and a small hat. The public was amazed and excited. Once again, the fashion designer proved to the world that stylish and elegant clothes can be very comfortable and functional.

The main features of the marine style

The main drawing of this style is, of course, a strip. The direction of the stripes can be different - horizontal, vertical, diagonal. As for the color combination, white, blue and, a little later, red colors were considered a classic option. Gradually other shades were added. Today yellow and green, and gold and silver, and black and sand are acceptable.
The main elements of marine-style clothing are skirts, trousers, tops, t-shirts, sundresses, dresses, shorts. Often the image is complemented by hats, accessories in the form of sea animals, anchors, ships, etc. Decorative ropes are often used for decoration. This style was recently perceived, mainly, as summer, so sandals or pumps were recommended from shoes. However, today there are no special restrictions - after all, this is a very free style.

Marine style by Burda

We suggest studying how marine style has changed over the years using Burda magazine models as an example. From 1950 to the present day there has not been a single year when clothes in this style would not have been presented by designers, that is, fashion for the marine style did not subside in any decade of the 20th century!

Marine style in the 1950s

The marine style of the 50s succinctly fits into the general fashion trends of that time: we see the silhouette traditional for that era: soft broad shoulders, a thin waist, underlined by a belt, a fluffy skirt that focuses on the hips. No less popular are two-piece suits and dresses of a more calm, restrained silhouette. Mandatory colors - blue, white, sometimes blue, red. The main drawing is a strip. Images complement gloves, hats, bags, earrings, bracelets. Marine-style clothing is worn on the beach and in everyday life.

Marine style in the 1960s

The 1960s completely excluded magnificent dresses from the marine style. Silhouettes have become simpler, clothes are more functional and more comfortable. The length of the skirt was noticeably shortened - more and more girls prefer the mini. Images in a marine style look very different: from strict, close to classic to funny, childishly playful. The primary colors are the same: red, blue, white. The main drawing is a strip. More attention is paid to deeds: interesting accessories (metal buttons, buckles, buttons) appear, hats become more diverse. There are still a few accessories - earrings, bracelets, sunglasses.

Marine style in the 1970s

The 1970s are famous for their diversity and eclecticism. Talking about one popular silhouette is simply impossible - this era combines many stylistic trends. However, there are still general trends. The sexual revolution, the active struggle for women's rights could not but be reflected in clothing. It became permissible to wear anything, the stringent requirements for the combination of certain details became significantly less. We see a wide variety of silhouettes: from adjacent, very feminine, to loose, a little rude, somewhat reminiscent of men's clothing. The key colors of the marine style remain unchanged - blue, red, white, but we see a greater variety in the picture. Designers began to play with the width and direction of the stripes, added prints with a nautical theme. Accessories are still pretty restrained.

Marine style in the 1980s

The marine style of the 1980s has undergone significant changes. Silhouettes, cut lines have become so diverse that it is quite difficult to describe them in a few words. Only the strip remained unchanged. We see models made entirely of striped fabric and combined with other materials. Details of clothing typical of the marine style of that era are practically unlimited: tops, blouses, dresses, skirts, shorts, trousers, overalls ... The color range has also expanded: green and yellow have been added to the traditional blue, white, and red. Accessories became larger and more noticeable, makeup - brighter.

Marine style in the 1990s

The marine style of the 1990s became more restrained and concise. The images look stricter, emphasizing the independence of women, their strength and self-confidence. The silhouette focuses on broad shoulders. The playfulness goes away, the color scheme also does not differ in variety: mainly blue and white prevail, gold is added, less often you can see red. Pants, shorts, overalls are more popular than dresses and skirts. A new trend has become business images in a marine style. The accessories are discreet, the makeup is calmer compared to the 1980s.

Marine style in the 2000s

The 2000s brought the play of color back to the marine style - red is actively appearing in models. In addition, a combination with black is also acceptable. Silhouettes are different - from flared to adjacent. The decoration is becoming more interesting and varied: bright furniture, decorative ropes, appliqués and prints of marine subjects. Demi-season clothing appears in a marine style. The strip is used everywhere: on the beach, in everyday life and even in the office. The images look bright and spectacular. Red lipstick or glasses in red frames become, if not mandatory, then a highly desirable addition. There are few accessories.

Marine style in the 2010s

The 2010s added even more variety to the marine style. There are practically no requirements for silhouettes, lengths, types of clothes. Both a long wide skirt on the floor and the adjacent mini-dress look equally relevant. The strip is not always found, although, undoubtedly, the key place still remains for it. The use of clothes in this style is as wide as possible - from sports, casual to business and classic. Color combinations are even bolder. For example, now it is not necessary to add white to the strip, you can do with red and blue or even black. Valid sand, gold, silver, green, yellow. The choice of accessories is also unlimited - it all depends on the image. Massive beads are perfectly acceptable if they look appropriate. There are no requirements for shoes either: these, as before, can be sandals or ballet shoes, or there can be high-heeled shoes or rubber boots. The main motto of the 2010s is convenience and individuality! They repulse from it, creating an image in a marine style.

How to create a modern look in a marine style

It is not difficult to create an image in a marine style these days. After all, as we have already said, there are no special requirements for silhouettes and forms of clothing. The main thing is to choose the right model and maintain the color combination. The combination of white with blue, less often with black, remains traditional, as many years ago. Other colors are acceptable, but in this case you need to add either a strip or details from marine clothing (for example, epaulets, collar, buttons or a hat) to the model.
